The intent of this specific project was to learn how to use a CNC router to cut fabric and engrave intricate designs into fabric through a computerized laser. We were instructed to create a design or pattern in Adobe Illustrator which would then be converted into a vector file and programmed into the CNC router to cut out the design in the fabric.
When creating the design, I opted for a silhouette that is abnormal to my usual style in an attempt to break out of my comfort zone and try something new. I used color, fabric, and the silhouette to convey the ever pushing expectations forced on women of all ages, and the juxtaposition of their real emotions under the surface.
I titled my work “Aries”, because being born between March 21st and April 19th, that makes my zodiac sign Aries, which comes with added pressure. My whole life people have told me that being an Aries means that I am rude and overbearing, which resulted in me trying to be nicer and more obedient than the next person, in an attempt to change people's perspective of me. However, I don't believe my entire being should boil down to a single zodiac sign and peoples perspective of me, nor should anyone elses.
Which is why I titled this garment, with such a delicate silhouette and contrasting dark and light colors, “Aries” to show we shouldn't have to cover our real emotions and feelings with what people want us to be.
